Research in Progress:

To Help or Harm: Optimizing International Support of Pro-Choice Activism in El Salvador

Abortion is currently illegal under all circumstances in El Salvador. This has created many human rights issues which local and international groups are working to remedy. Based on my research in San Salvador, this project explores the involvement of international human rights and reproductive rights groups with the Salvadorian grassroots activists. Ethnographic research brings to light which activities of international groups are seen as supportive by local activists and which activities could be improved to meet local needs more effectively. This fills a gap in the current research on reproductive rights in El Salvador and will improve cooperation between groups. The goal of this project is to amplify the voices of local activists without speaking for them. This will help ensure that the work of international groups is conducted in accordance with the values and goals of the local activists in the most efficient way possible.

The final paper resulting from this research is still in progress and will receive community feedback before being made publically available.

The summary presentation is available here in the meantime
